Robin Herd , CBE (March 23, 1939 - June 4, 2019 ) was an English engineer , racing car designer and co-founder of the March Engineering racing team .
Career
McLaren
Herd studied at St Peter's College in Oxford and initially worked as an engineer for the Royal Aircraft Establishment on the development of the Concorde . In 1965 he was poached by McLaren and entrusted by Firestone with the development of the McLaren M2 , a racing car test vehicle made of a composite material made of wood and aluminum . The car was used in Formula 1 in 1966 with little success . Herd's sports car for the CanAm series won titles for McLaren in 1966, 1967 and 1968. Herd designed the McLaren M7A for the 1968 season and then moved to Cosworth to develop an all-wheel drive Formula 1 car.
March engineering
Has been called the Cosworth project canceled up stove did in 1969 with Max Mosley , Alan Rees and Graham Coaker and founded March Engineering . The new company quickly developed into a successful racing car manufacturer. At the end of 1977, Herd was the last founding member remaining in the company. He withdrew March from Formula 1 and concentrated on building vehicles for Formula 2 and Formula 3 .
After a brief, unsuccessful return to Formula 1 in the 1981 season , Herd relocated his field of activity to the USA. The March IndyCars became the dominant car of the 1980s. In the course of its success, Herd brought his company onto the stock exchange in 1986. In the same year he was named Commander of the British Empire for his services to the motorsport industry .
In 1987 Herd March brought Leyton House back into Formula 1 with the main sponsor . In 1989, he sold the team to the Japanese company and founded Robin Herd Ltd. , a design office in Bicester. Herd developed another Formula 1 car here and in 1991, under the company name Fomet 1, joined the Fondmetal team again in the top racing class. In 1992 he signed a contract with the Larrousse team for the delivery of racing cars. When this was dissolved in 1995, Herd renamed his office GenTech and worked for the CART team Forsythe Racing .
Shortly thereafter, Herd withdrew from racing and bought the English football club Oxford United with the aim of renovating the stadium. He also founded a company for research into renewable energy . Both projects were not very successful. After two and a half years, Herd withdrew from the football club.
