Cochinoca is a small mining town in the Cochinoca department of the same name in the Jujuy province in the extreme northwest of Argentina . The settlement is located in the Puna at an altitude of 3552 meters and has 75 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2001).
history
The place Cochinoca was founded at the beginning of the 17th century and at the end of that century had between 600 and 800 inhabitants. A series of infrastructural measures degraded the mining site, which was important in pre-Columbian times, to insignificance over time. Before the Spaniards, the Inca trade route, the Camino del Inca , ran through the town. For a while, Cochinoca was the capital of the department. The relocation of the trunk road past the place meant that the capital dignity for the department of Cochinoca was transferred to Abra Pampa . The dwindling importance of mining and the route of the railway line east of the town caused the population to shrink to 45 by 1915. The place never recovered from its loss of function.
