The Palpalá Department is located in the south of the Jujuy Province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 16 administrative units .
It is bordered by the Ledesma Department to the north, the San Pedro Department to the east, the El Carmen and San Antonio Department to the south and the Doctor Manuel Belgrano Department to the west .
The capital of the department is the Palpalá of the same name .

According to the last census, the Palpalá department has 48,199 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2001). According to estimates by INDEC, the population rose to 60,768 in 2005.
