The Humahuaca Department is located in the northeast of the Jujuy Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.
It borders the Yavi Department in the north, the Salta Province in the east, the Valle Grande , Tilcara and Tumbaya departments in the south and the Cochinoca Department in the west .
The capital of the department is the eponymous Humahuaca .

According to the last census, the Humahuaca department has 16,765 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2001). According to INDEC estimates, the population increased to 19,068 in 2005.
