The Susques department is located in the southwest of the Jujuy Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.
Susques is the largest department in the province of Jujuy with an area of 9,199 km², but has only 3,628 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ) and thus a population density of 0.4 inh / km². According to INDEC, the population rose to 3,743 by 2005. The Susques department was incorporated into the Jujuy Province in 1943 after the Gobernación de Los Andes was dissolved .
In this department is the Paso de Jama , a year-round pass road to Chile that is paved throughout Argentina .
