View of Susques

Susques is the capital of the Susques department of the same name in the Jujuy Province in the far north-west of Argentina . The community is located in the Puna at 3896 meters above sea level and is therefore the highest place in Argentina that can be reached on a paved road. Susques is located on the Ruta Nacional 52 , which leads from Purmamarca over the Paso de Jama to Antofagasta in Chile .

history

At the end of the 18th century, Susques was an important mining center of the Puna Atacameña. In the following years the place belonged to Bolivia and then to Chile before it was added to Argentina after border negotiations. From 1899, Susques was the capital of the northern part of the Territorio Nacional de los Andes , which was abandoned in 1943. The department was then incorporated into the Jujuy Province.

Others

  • The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Belén de Susques has been declared a national monument.
  • About 15 kilometers from Susques, accessible via the Ruta Provincial 16, is the Quebrada del Taire with a view of the plateau on which Susques lies. Trout are fished in the nearby lakes.
