Course of the 52

The Ruta Nacional 52 leads from the Ruta Nacional 9 near Purmamarca to the border between Chile and Argentina on the Paso de Jama.

The completely paved road is the main connection between the Pacific ports of Antofagasta and Iquique and the north-west of Argentina, to San Pedro de Atacama it continues on the Chilean side for 127 kilometers as Ruta 27 (Chile) . The Pacific ports can be reached via the well-developed network of Chilean national roads.

Ruta Nacional 52 crosses the Salinas Grandes

The 243 kilometer long road runs largely through the province of Jujuy , only to the west of the Salinas Grandes is crossed for about 35 kilometers through the La Poma department in the province of Salta . Also in the province of Jujuy only three departments are crossed:

  1. Tumbaya Department (with the villages of Purmamarca , La Cienaga and Puerta de Lipan )
  2. Departamento Cochinoca (about 8 kilometers long section leads through deserted area)
  3. Department Susques (with the main town Susques )

The national road 52 crosses the Salinas Grandes near the first crossing of the border with the province of Salta. The route crosses several mountain ranges, the main chain of the Andes on the Paso de Jama is passed at around 4,400 m, the Quebrada de Humahuaca is reached after crossing the Cuesta de Lipan (4,100 m).
