The department of La Poma is located in the northeast of the province of Salta in northwest Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the province of Jujuy to the north, the Rosario de Lerma department to the east, the Cachi department to the south and the Los Andes department to the west .
The capital of the department is La Poma of the same name .
In this department, on Ruta Nacional 40 , the Abra del Acay is one of the highest mountain passes in the world.
