The La Caldera Department is one of 23 administrative units in the Salta Province in northwestern Argentina . It is located in the north of the province of Salta and borders in the north with the province Jujuy , in the east with the department General Güemes , in the south with the department Capital and in the west with the department Rosario de Lerma . The capital of the department is La Caldera of the same name .

The La Caldera department is located in the north of the Valle de Lerma and is very mountainous. In the far north-west are the highest mountains: the Cerro Negro with a height of approx. 5,000 m, the Cerro Matadero and the Cerro Chapeau . More towards the center are the Cerros Alfo , Yaretas and Capanario and in the center of the department the Cerro Pajas Blancas or Cerro San Alejo . On the border to the south are the Sierra Vaqueros and the Cerro Pacará . On the east side of the Valle de Siancas, which runs in north-south direction along the Ruta Nacional 9 , the mountain peaks of Gallinato , Cerro Velazco and Cerro Pelado are located on the east side . In the far northeast the Cuchilla de la Trampa and Loma Pelada tower up. On the eastern border of the department is the Morro de la Despensa , Los Peñones , Mesada del Aserradero , Monte Paraíso and the Sierras de Santa Gertrudis .

The largest watercourse in the department is the Río La Caldera , which flows from north to south, with its tributaries: Arroyo Pajarito , Río Santa Rufina , Río San Alejo and Río Wierna . After the confluence with the Río Wierna, the Río La Caldera takes its name until it flows into the Río Vaqueros , where both continue to flow under the name Río Mojotoro . The tributaries of the Río Vaqueros are the Río Lesser and the Arroyo Castellanos .

In the east of the department are the Río de las Pavas , Arroyo de los Porongos , Cañada del Tigre , Arroyo de los Matos and Arroyo del Gallinato . In the north, the Río La Caldera is dammed into the Campo Alegre reservoir.

economy

Agriculture primarily produces Virginia tobacco, followed by corn, oats, barley, green peas, fodder crops , pumpkins, tomatoes, and other vegetables. The livestock industry includes the production of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses. In forestry there are cedars , walnuts , pines and willows . Lead, silver and zinc are the mining deposits of the department.
