The department of Cachi is located in the center of the province of Salta in northwest Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north by the department of La Poma , to the north and east by the department of Rosario de Lerma , to the east by the department of Chicoana , to the south by the departments of Molinos and San Carlos and to the west by the department of Los Andes .
The capital of the department is the eponymous Cachi .
