The General Güemes Department is located in the center of the Salta Province in north-western Argentina and is one of the province's 23 administrative units .

It borders on the province of Jujuy to the north, the Anta department to the east, the Metán department to the south and the Capital and La Caldera departments to the west .

The capital of the department is General Güemes of the same name .

The mean annual temperature is 17 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall is between 500 and 1,100 millimeters.

economy

Agriculture produces drupes, olives, peppers, strawberries, nuts, sugar cane and table grapes in irrigation. Beans, grain and forage crops are produced in dry cultivation. In livestock farming, cattle breeding serves both meat production and dairy farming. Goats and pigs are also bred. Forestry is dedicated to the production of eucalyptus, pine, willow and poplar. The agro-industrial processing plants (cold stores, dairies, sugar refineries, sawmills, etc.) and the power station for generating electrical energy are of great importance for the department.
