The Orán Department is located in the north of the Salta Province in northeast Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.
It borders in the north with Bolivia and the Department of Santa Victoria , in the east with the Departments General José de San Martín and Rivadavia , in the south with the Department Anta and in the west with the Province Jujuy .
The capital of the department is San Ramón de la Nueva Orán .

According to the last census, the Orán department has 124,029 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2001). According to estimates by INDEC, the population increased to 137,659 in 2005.
