San Ramón de la Nueva Orán website

San Ramón de la Nueva Orán , or simply Orán, is the capital of the Orán department of the same name in the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina . It has 72,712 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ), making it the second largest city in the province.

location

Orán is located in the valley of the Río Bermejo river, a little away from the river, in an area rich in forests and rain, which is part of the so-called Yungas ( mountain rainforests ). To the west and east of the city, two mountain ranges extend in a north-south direction. The climate belongs to the transition area between the tropics and the subtropics : the summers are hot and very humid, the winters moderately warm and comparatively dry.

The city has close contact with several nearby cities in the valley of the Río Bermejo, which together form a small agglomeration with around 130,000 inhabitants. The largest of them are Hipólito Yrigoyen (11,000 inhabitants), Pichanal (21,000 inhabitants) and Embarcación (24,000 inhabitants).

history

The first city was founded in the area as early as 1625, but it was abandoned. It was called Santiago del Guadalcázar . The final city of San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, however, was only founded in 1794 by Ramón García de León y Pizarro in the checkerboard pattern, who named it after the Algerian city of Oran . It grew only slowly in the 19th century and was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1871. In 1889 the city was declared the capital of its associated department, at that time it was already the second largest city in the province of Salta with 3,500 inhabitants. In 1915 the city was connected to the railway network, which means that it continued to grow.

economy

The city's economy is dominated by the tropical agriculture in the area (including tobacco cultivation) and by the processing industry. There is also some tourism because of the rainforest environment and the nearby Baritú National Park .
