Pichanal is a city in the Orán department in the Salta province in northwestern Argentina . With 18,773 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ) it is the fourth largest city in the province.

location

Pichanal is located on the banks of the Río Colorado , a few kilometers west of its confluence with the Río Bermejo .

With several nearby cities in the valley of the Río Bermejo, Pichanal forms a metropolitan area with a total of around 130,000 inhabitants. The largest of these places are San Ramón de la Nueva Orán (74,000 inhabitants), Embarcación (24,000 inhabitants), and Hipólito Yrigoyen (11,000 inhabitants).

history

In the nineteenth century, Pichanal was a small village. Its economic boom began with the connection to the railway network on January 4, 1911.
