The Metán Department is located in the center of the Salta Province in north-western Argentina and is one of the province's 23 administrative units . The capital of the department is San José de Metán .

Metán is bordered in the north by the departments Capital and General Güemes , in the north and east by the department Anta , in the south by the department Rosario de la Frontera and in the west by the departments La Viña and Guachipas .
