The Los Andes department is located in the west of the Salta province in north-west Argentina and is one of the province's 23 administrative units . It is the largest and most sparsely populated department in Salta Province.
It borders the province of Jujuy to the north, the departments of La Poma , Cachi and Molinos to the east, the province of Catamarca to the south and Chile to the west .
The capital of the department is San Antonio de los Cobres .
From 1902 to 1944 the department belonged to the Territorio Nacional de los Andes , whose capital was San Antonio. However, due to the small population and economic stagnation of the territory, it was integrated into the province of Salta, the other departments in the provinces of Jujuy and Catamarca .
