It was not until 1582 that the conqueror Hernando de Lerma penetrated the valley and founded Salta, which served as a supply center for the mining cities of Bolivia. During the struggle for independence of Argentina , the region was defended against attacks by the Spaniards by Martín Miguel de Güemes . The 19th century led to an economic crisis due to the remoteness and the lack of opportunities to export the products. Only the connection to the railway network brought the possibility of shipping the goods produced.
