Tilcara (actually: San Francisco de Tilcara ) is the capital of the Tilcara department of the same name in the Jujuy Province at the confluence of the Río Grande de Jujuy and the Río Huasamayo in north-western Argentina . It has 5,640 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ), is at an altitude of 2,456 meters and is 84 kilometers from the provincial capital San Salvador de Jujuy , off the Ruta Nacional 9 . Due to its preferred location in terms of landscape and traffic in a basin-like widening of the Quebrada de Humahuaca gorge , the place has developed into a tourist relay station for tours through the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the Puna .

tourism

Tilcara is particularly interesting because of its location in the midst of multi-colored mountain landscapes, because of its buildings from the colonial era, its lively Indian culture and the archaeological excavations on the Pucará , which gave the city the nickname "Capital of Archeology". Another attraction are the festivals: the folkloric Enero Tilcareño in the second half of January and the traditional carnival in February.
