El Carmen is the capital of the El Carmen department of the same name in the Jujuy Province in northwest Argentina . It has 14,953 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ) and is 45 kilometers from the provincial capital San Salvador de Jujuy at an altitude of 1140 meters. El Carmen is one of the oldest settlements in the Jujuy Province.
