Rinconada is the capital of the Rinconada department of the same name in the Jujuy Province in the far north-west of Argentina . It is located in the Puna at an altitude of 3953 meters and is therefore the highest place in Argentina with its own administration. Rinconada can be reached via Ruta Provincial 7 , which branches off from Ruta Nacional 9 four kilometers north of Abra Pampa . The distance from the junction to Rinconada is 62 kilometers.

The total population of the municipality includes 1352 inhabitants, of which only 353 inhabitants live in the center. Compared to the 1991 census, the 2001 census showed a population decrease of 21.67 percent.

Rinconada has a church called Iglesia de San José. The 150 km² large lake Laguna de los Pozuelos is located near Rinconada .
