Charles de Viel-Castel

Charles Louis Gaspard Gabriel de Salviac, Baron de Viel-Castel (born October 14, 1800 in Paris , † October 6, 1887 there ) was a French historian and diplomat .

Life

De Viel-Castel studied law in Paris and entered the diplomatic career in 1818 in the Foreign Ministry. In 1821 he became attaché , 1825 secretary of the diplomatic mission in Madrid , 1828 in Vienna and in 1829 Sous-Directeur des affaires politiques of the political department in the Foreign Ministry . He also held this post under the July monarchy and was promoted to director there in 1849.

After the coup d'état by Louis Napoleon in 1851, he took his leave and was elected a member of the Académie française ( seat 6 ) in 1873 . His brother was the writer Horace de Viel-Castel (1802–1864).

In addition to numerous articles in the Revue des Deux Mondes , he also published his own works:

  • Essai historique sur les deux Pitt (2 vols., 1846)
  • Histoire de la Restoration (20 vols., 1860–1878)
  • Essai sur le théâtre espagnol (2 vols., 1882)
