The Laguna de los Pozuelos is a salt lake in the highlands of Argentina . The lake is located in a high basin of the Puna immediately east of the main cordillera of the Andes at an altitude of 3635 m above sea level on the border of the Rinconada , Santa Catalina and Yavi departments in the northwest of the Jujuy province .
Water supply
The Río Cincel and Río Sarcari are the main tributaries. The extent of the lake depends heavily on the fluctuating water supply. The maximum extent at the end of the rainy season (March, April) can be 25 kilometers in north-south direction and 9 kilometers in east-west direction.
nature
The Laguna de los Pozuelos is part of the Monumento Natural Laguna de los Pozuelos bird sanctuary and is designated according to the Ramsar Convention . There are breeding colonies of three different species of flamingos . There are also several types of ducks , geese and railings . The barren bank areas, which are largely only characterized by Ichu grass and salt crusts, are populated by vicuñas .
Access
Access is from Abra Pampa via Ruta Provincial 7 - which also has buses to Rinconada near the western shore of the lake - or from La Quiaca via Ruta Nacional 40 and then via Ruta Provincial 87 or Ruta Provincial 7a.
