La Quiaca is a city in the extreme northwest of Argentina . It is the capital of the Yavi department and is located in the north of the Jujuy province on the border with Bolivia . La Quiaca is connected to the Bolivian city of Villazón via the international bridge "Horacio Guzmán" , which crosses the Río La Quiaca . La Quiaca has about 13,761 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2010), making it the largest city in the Argentine Puna region. The distance to the provincial capital San Salvador de Jujuy is 289 kilometers and to the southernmost city of Argentina, Ushuaia , 5121 kilometers.

The city is located south of the not particularly water-rich Río La Quiaca , which forms the border between Argentina and Bolivia, on the plateau of the steppe-like Puna, at an altitude of 3442 meters.

history
La Quiaca was founded on February 28, 1907. In 1908, the railway from San Salvador de Jujuy reached the border between Argentina and Bolivia. Around the station, the city of La Quiaca developed over the course of the century.
Events
In October the Manca Fiesta is held in La Quiaca , the festival of pots. Numerous artisans from the Jujuy province as well as from the nearby areas of Bolivia meet there to display and sell their pots. The festival is now a major tourist attraction.
