Transport links

On the Bolivian side, the bridge is the end point of Ruta 14 , which leads to Cuchu Ingenio , a few kilometers before Potosí . On the Argentine side, the bridge is the end point of the 1830 kilometer long Ruta Nacional 9 , which begins in Buenos Aires . The Villazón / La Quiaca border crossing is one of the major border crossings between Argentina and Bolivia and the only one in the Jujuy Province and the Potosí Department .

Border clearance and fortification

Until the end of 2015, the controls at the border guards were very easy to circumvent on both sides. Firstly, they were not manned around the clock, secondly, they could easily be bypassed at any time by either walking past the border controls or walking straight through the bed of the almost dry Rio La Quiaca. This was mainly used by the local population, whose life on the two sides is quite networked, but there was also a constant and obvious smuggling of goods across the border in both directions. In November 2015, the Argentine authorities began to fortify the border, erecting a 1 km long fence in both directions and tightening controls on the bridge in order to combat drug smuggling . On the Bolivian side, however, there were protests against the measures, which they believed would not effectively combat smuggling. A solution to the problem has not yet been found (as of March 2016).

construction

The concrete bridge is 31 m long and 7.80 m wide and was opened on July 9, 1960. Due to the strong increase in border traffic in the last few decades, negotiations are being held on the construction of another, larger bridge a few kilometers to the west.
