Villazón is a medium- sized town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . The city was founded on May 20, 1910 and named after the then Bolivian President, Eliodoro Villazón .
Location in the vicinity
Villazón is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Villazón in the province of Modesto Omiste . The city is located in southern Bolivia at an altitude of 3450 m on the border with Argentina on the left bank of the Río Sochora , one of the headwaters of the Río Pilcomayo . South of Villazón, on the Argentine side of the border, lies the city of La Quiaca , which has merged with Villazón and can be reached via the “Horacio Guzmán” bridge.

Villazón is located in the southern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.
The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see Villazón climate diagram) and fluctuates only slightly between a good 5 ° C in June / July and a good 14 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is only about 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 70-90 mm monthly precipitation.

From Villazón in a northerly direction the paved road Ruta 14 leads 92 kilometers to the town of Tupiza and another 261 kilometers via Cuchu Ingenio to Potosí .
From Villazón in a north-easterly direction, the unpaved route 28 leads over 165 kilometers to the city of Padcaya in the Tarija department . There it meets Ruta 1 , which goes south to the city of Bermejo and in a north direction after 51 kilometers reaches Tarija and after another 362 kilometers Potosí.

economy
Villazón is a typical border town, the trade with legal, but also with smuggled goods is the dominant economic sector. Because of the low prices, it is very well known as a shopping city in the Argentine province of Jujuy . The center is modern and characterized by small shops that mainly sell textiles and electronic items.
