Site and history

The townscape is characterized by its colonial buildings made of mud bricks and narrow streets on the edge of high, colorful mountains. The historic church Iglesia de la Virgen de la Candelaria from 1796 contains valuable pictures from the painting school of Cuzco and some goldsmith work. Unitarian troops stopped here in 1840 when they transported the remains of their general Juan Lavalle to Purmamarca . The church was declared a national monument. The statue of St. Francisco Solano and the source of holy water El manantial Agua Bendita are attributed to the Franciscan saint who also came through Tumbaya.

climate

The climate is temperate and dry.

Festivals

  • Virgen de la Candelaria . (February 2nd)
  • Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores (September 15). Both patronage festivals attract onlookers from the region and are accompanied by folk festivals and markets with regional products.
  • El Domingo de Ramos . 22 kilometers away, on a mountain on the opposite bank of the Río Grande de Jujuy, is the Capilla Punta Corral . Once a year, to the Domingo de Ramos, thousands of pilgrims accompany the image of the Virgen de Copacabana from the mountains to Tumbaya, dancing around the image , whereby the crossing of the Río Grande de Jujuy outside the gates of the place is considered a baptismal act. During Easter week the picture will be transferred to Tilcara.
