James Allison (born February 21, 1968 in Louth ) is a motorsport engineer and the Technical Director Chassis at Mercedes AMG F1 Team .

After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1991, Allison joined the aerodynamics department of the Benetton Formula 1 team . After a few years he left Benetton and moved to Larrousse as chief engineer before returning to Benetton as chief engineer in the mid-1990s. In 2000 James Allison went to Scuderia Ferrari for five years . After his return to Benetton in 2005, which was meanwhile under the name Renault F1 , he worked as deputy technical director.

In 2009 he was promoted to head of technology at Renault. Allison was Technical Director of this team, which was renamed Renault F1 Team in 2010 , Lotus Renault GP in 2011 and Lotus F1 Team in 2012 , until 2013. He then moved to Ferrari a second time, where he held the position of Technical Director Chassis. Nick Chester took over at Lotus .

James Allison left the Ferrari team at the end of July 2016. On the one hand, there were some personal problems with him - his wife died unexpectedly in the spring of 2016 - on the other hand displeased Allison constant interference by Fiat - and Ferrari - CEO Sergio Marchionne .

On February 16, 2017, he was introduced by the Mercedes AMG F1 Team as the new Technical Director with effect from March 1, 2017. In his role, he reports directly to team boss Toto Wolff .
