Career
Beginnings in motorcycle sport (2006-2014)
The one in the French port city of Nice -born Fabio Quartararo sat at the age of four years for the first time on a motorcycle , with seven he started motorcycle racing . After moving to Spain he became national champion there in the classes of motorcycles with 70, 80 and 125 cubic centimeters displacement . In 2013 he competed in the Moto3 class of the Spanish Championship for Wild Wolf Racing. With three wins in the last three races of the season, which took place in Cheste and Jerez de la Frontera , he won the championship title. He also started in this series in 2014, now for the Junior Team Estrella Galicia 0.0. In eleven races he achieved nine wins and two second places. With that he became a master again.
Moto3 World Championship (2015-2016)
For the 2015 season Quartararo moved to the Moto3 class of the motorcycle world championship . The previously valid rule that riders of the motorcycle world championship must be at least 16 years old has been repealed. His teammate was the Spaniard Jorge Navarro and thus another rookie. On March 29, 2015, at the age of 15, he made his debut at the Qatar Grand Prix on a Honda from the Estrella Galicia 0.0 team . With seventh place he immediately scored his first points in the motorcycle world championship. Two weeks later he was able to place himself on the podium for the first time in his second Grand Prix at the Texas Grand Prix. After finishing sixth in the race in Argentina , he started the race from pole position for the first time at the Spanish Grand Prix , which he finished in fourth place. In France he reached pole position again, but retired early in the race. He couldn't finish the race in Italy either. At the Grand Prix of Catalonia he finished in 14th place. At the Dutch TT he reached the podium for the second time this year with second place. After a failure in Germany , an eleventh place in Indianapolis and another failure in the Czech Republic , he achieved fourth place at the British Grand Prix . He then had to take a break for a total of five races due to an ankle injury . He was only able to start again at the season finale, the Valencia Grand Prix , but retired early. With 92 points, he was tenth in the Moto3 World Championship.
In 2016 Fabio Quartararo competed in the Moto3 World Championship on a KTM for Leopard Racing. His teammates were Joan Mir from Spain and Andrea Locatelli from Italy . After three 13th places in the first three races in Qatar, Argentina and Texas as well as a failure in Spain, Quartararo was able to place in the top ten three times in a row: at the French Grand Prix, fifth, in Italy, and the Grand Prix of Catalonia as seventh. In the following six races he only classified himself fourth in the points at the Austrian Grand Prix ; there were also two failures at the Dutch TT and in Great Britain, a 23rd place in Germany, a 21st in the Czech Republic and an 18th place in San Marino . He finished twelfth at the Grand Prix of Aragon . This began a series of races in which he scored points that lasted until the end of the season: After finishing eighth in Japan and twelfth in Australia , he finished fourth in Malaysia and finished 14th at the season finale in Valencia. With 83 points he was 13th overall in Moto3 and was therefore defeated by two teammates who were fifth and ninth respectively.
Moto2 World Championship (2017-2018)
In 2017 Quartararo was promoted to the Moto2 class of the motorcycle world championship, in which he sat on a Kalex for Páginas Amarillas HP 40 and became a teammate of the Spaniard Edgar Pons . As he had done two years before, he scored his first scoring points straight away in his first race in the new class as seventh in the Qatar Grand Prix. At the Grand Prix of Argentina, he was eliminated. The further course of the season for Quartararo was changeable: Twelfth place in Texas was followed by a series of three races without points at the Grand Prix of Spain (16th place), France and Italy (18th place each). Only in the race in Catalonia he was able to reach the points again in seventh place. He came ninth at the Dutch TT and 13th at the German Grand Prix. With a 20th place in the Czech Republic, a retirement in Austria and a 16th place in Great Britain, three races without points followed. In the remaining six Grand Prix he scored sixth in San Marino, eleventh in Aragon, seventh in Malaysia and eighth in Valencia. In Japan he was not able to do so as 19th as well as by a failure in Australia. With 64 points he finished 13th in the world championship. Pons, who scored two points and WM-34. he could hit.
For the 2018 season, the former Kalex rider switched to Speed Up Racing within the Moto2 World Championship . His teammate there was the Briton Danny Kent , who was replaced during the season by Quartararo's former teammate Edgar Pons and the Italian Tommaso Marcon . After missing points at the season opener in Qatar as 20th and at the second Grand Prix in Argentina as 22nd, he scored the first point for his new team in the third race in Texas as 15th. After finishing tenth in the Spanish Grand Prix, eighth in France and eleventh in Italy, he achieved his first pole position since his debut season in qualifying for the Catalonia Grand Prix, which took place on June 17, 2018. He implemented this in the race for his first Grand Prix victory. He also drove the fastest race lap in the motorcycle world championship for the first time . At the Dutch TT two weeks later, he reached the next podium finish in second place. In the further course of the year Quartararo only missed the points at the Japanese Grand Prix through a disqualification and was tenth in the drivers' standings with 138 points. With that he beat Kent, who was 25 with eight points. and Pons, who finished 31st with a point, while Marcon stayed without a point.
MotoGP (since 2019)
After four years in their substructures, Quartararo will start in the top class of the motorcycle world championship, MotoGP . At the side of the Italian Franco Morbidelli , he is part of the Petronas Yamaha SRT team and sits on a Yamaha . As in the previous year, he finished 16th without points in the first race of the season in Qatar, but drove the fastest lap in his first MotoGP race. In Argentina in eighth and in Texas in seventh, he scored his first points. At the Spanish Grand Prix he started the race from pole position and thus became the youngest pole setter in MotoGP, but retired early due to problems with the gearshift on his Yamaha. After an eighth place and the fastest race lap in France and tenth place in Italy, he drove from pole position to second place and his first podium in MotoGP at the Grand Prix of Catalonia. In the following race, the Dutch TT, he started again from the front starting position and finished third. At the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, he retired after a front wheel slip on the second lap when he tried to overtake Danilo Petrucci on the outside in the Omega . After a seventh place in the Czech Republic, he achieved the third podium finish of the year in Austria. A retirement in Great Britain was followed by three second places in four races: In San Marino, from pole position at the Grand Prix of Thailand and in Japan. Only at the Grand Prix of Aragon this series was interrupted with a fifth place. In Australia he retired after a collision with Danilo Petrucci. In Malaysia, he drove from pole position to seventh place. At the season finale in Valencia he started from pole again and finished second on the podium again. With seven podium places, six pole positions, two fastest race laps and 192 points, he finished fifth overall in the drivers' world championship in his first MotoGP season. He was ahead of Morbidelli, who took tenth place.
At the start of the 2020 motorcycle world championship, which started late due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Quartararo won the Spanish Grand Prix, starting from pole position. It was his first win in MotoGP.
