M&M has the following work areas:

Automotive Division : The factories in Mumbai, Nashik , Igatpuri and Zaheerabad produce pickups , light commercial vehicles and three-wheelers .
Farm Equipment Division : Divided into the two large factories in Mumbai and Nagpur and the smaller factories in Rudrapur (Uttarakhand) and Jaipur , this division mainly produces agricultural vehicles such as tractors for the farm sector. Industrial machines have also been produced in recent years.
Mahindra Defense Systems (MDS) : Based in New Delhi , MDS has been developing and manufacturing bulletproof vehicles for the Indian government for fifty years.

M&M employs around 11,600 people and has eight production facilities that cover an area of 500,000 m². The company has 49 sales offices supported by a network of over 760 retailers across India.

history

The company was founded on October 2, 1945 under the name Mahindra & Mohammed by the brothers Jagdish Chandra and Kailash Chandra Mahindra together with the later Pakistani Governor General Ghulam Mohammed . With the appointment of Ghulam Mohammed as Minister of Finance of Pakistan, it was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra Limited . M & M began trading steel and in 1947 the first successes with a trading volume of 200 tons of galvanized steel, which led to the establishment of the M & M Steel Division . In October 1947 the first CJ jeeps were imported from Willys-Overland to India and in 1949 the assembly of jeeps from imported parts from Willys-Overland began.

In 1954 the license agreement was signed with Kaiser-Jeep and American Motors for the joint production of Jeep models in India. As early as 1962, the Indian production quota for parts was 70% of the Jeep and 55 hectares of land were bought from Kandivli ( Mumbai , Maharashtra ) in order to centralize production. Production of the FC-150 petrol truck began in 1965 and was expanded to include several model variants in 1967. At that time, 97% of the parts were manufactured by M&M itself. In 1969/1970 the export of the vehicles began and in 1974 the further cooperation with Kaiser-Jeep was contractually agreed, which at that time was already owned by AMC, Detroit. In 1979 there was a contract for cooperation with Peugeot in the diesel engine sector, which resulted in the diesel engine in the Mahindra models. In addition to passenger cars, the company now also produces tractors , buses , machine tools , electronic controls and much more.

In the 1980s, the Mahindra off-road vehicle was assembled by other companies for the first time under license. The first external assembly in Tehran was at Pars Khodro . There, however, the model was marketed under the name Tosan Commander Jeep and became the successor to the Jeep Shahbaz . In the early 1990s, the model was also manufactured under license in Werdau, Saxony . In contrast, the Mahindra Scorpio has been rolling off the assembly line at the Bavarian Auto Group in Egypt since 2010 . There was also a joint venture with Renault at the same time . Underneath, the Logan was launched under the double brand name as Mahindra Renault .

In 2011, M&M acquired 70% of the South Korean automaker SsangYong . Mahindra models have also been assembled at Pragoti Industries in Bangladesh since the 2010s .

Since January 2015, Mahindra & Mahindra has held a 51% majority stake in Peugeot Motocycles , and 76.06% of the shares in Pininfarina SpA were acquired in December of the same year .

In 2017 Mahindra took over the Turkish agricultural machinery manufacturers Hisalar and Erkunt Traktör .
