Standard Motor Products of India Limited was an automobile manufacturer from India . One source indicates that the company first Union Motor Co. said.

Company history

The British Standard Motor Company founded the company for the manufacture of automobiles in India in Chennai in 1948 . Production started in 1950. The brand name was Standard . In early 1988 it was announced that the company could no longer pay its 3,258 employees. Production ended in the same year.

From 1950 the standard Vanguard was produced. Standard Eight and Standard Ten followed in 1955 and the Standard Pennant in 1959 . In 1961 the Standard Herald was introduced, which corresponded to the British Triumph Herald , and was produced until 1970. Its successor, Standard Gazel , existed from 1971 to 1977. Between 1977 and 1985, the focus was on commercial vehicles . The last car model was the Standard 2000 between 1985 and 1988 , which externally corresponded to the Rover SD1 .
