history

The company was founded in Mumbai in 1942 by four friends, Champaklal Choksey , Chimanlal Choksi , Suryakant Dani and Arvind Vakil . By 1967 it became the leading paint manufacturer in the country. The four families of the founders together held the majority shares in the company. However, disputes over global rights began in the 1990s when the company expanded beyond India. The disputes resulted in Choksey selling his 13.7% stake and leaving in 1997. After failed cooperation talks with the British company Imperial Chemical Industries , the shares of Choksey were jointly bought by the remaining three family trusts and the Unit Trust of India .
