Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is an Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Mumbai . Sun Pharmaceutical is one of the 50 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and is the largest company in the industry in India. Areas of application for pharmaceuticals from Sun Pharmaceutical are cardiology , neurology , gastroenterology and psychiatry .

The company was founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi , had five different products for the treatment of mental illnesses in its portfolio and had a sales team of just two people. In 1994 Sun Pharma went public. As early as 1996, the sales network was expanded to 24 countries and in the following years the company grew strongly through takeovers. In 2014, the Indian competitor Ranbaxy Laboratories was taken over by Sun Pharma, making the merged company the fifth largest manufacturer of specialty generics. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is part of the Indian BSE Sensex share index.
