Dieter Stappert (born October 13, 1942 in Villach ; † October 17, 2008 in Munich ) was an Austrian journalist and team manager in motorsport .

Until 1977 Stappert was editor-in-chief of the Swiss specialist magazine Powerslide , later renamed Motorsport aktuell . From 1977 to 1985 he worked for BMW Motorsport GmbH , from 1980 in the position of race director. Under his team leadership, Nelson Piquet became the first Formula 1 world champion with a turbo engine in a Brabham - BMW in 1983 .

From 1985 Dieter Stappert was responsible for the motorsport program of the HB cigarette brand , which initially consisted of the Audi Sport rally program and later of motorcycle racing activities, primarily for the Honda sports department . From 1997 on, Stappert was an independent team manager in the 250 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship . Over the years Reinhold Roth , Ralf Waldmann , Jeremy McWilliams , Chaz Davies , Helmut Bradl and his son Stefan Bradl drove in the teams he led .

Dieter Stappert fell into a coma on June 19, 2008 after a heart attack while checking in for a flight to Donington Park at Munich Airport , did not wake up and died on October 17, 2008.
