FDGB Cup 1962/63
The 1962/63 FDGB soccer cup competition was the twelfth in the history of this soccer event.
As in the previous year, the cup games began with a qualifying round with 54 teams, made up of the 30 finalists of the district cup competitions and 24 added representatives of the third-rate 2nd GDR league . The 28 teams of the first GDR league intervened in the first main round on September 16, 1962, the 14 upper division clubs were there from round 3. Six representatives of the latter have already left there: activist Brieske-Senftenberg , Dynamo Dresden , Turbine Erfurt , Motor Jena , Rotation Leipzig and Aufbau Magdeburg .
In addition to the remaining eight league teams, seven teams from the first GDR league and Chemie Lauscha, a single representative of the second GDR league, reached the round of 16. The Thuringians did not play against Lok Stendal . Their representatives officially stated that they could not get a full crew together; It was rumored, however, that the BSG wanted to protest against the forced delegation of its service providers. Last year's finalist Dynamo Berlin provided another surprise in the round of 16 with their 3-1 defeat at Motor West Karl-Marx-Stadt (1st GDR League).
The Saxons reached the semi-finals after a 3-0 win over Lok Stendal, where it took two games against the second surprise team, Chemie Zeitz , also from the 1st GDR League, before Zeitz sensationally reached the final. With the BSG Motor Zwickau , which had also eliminated the cup defender Chemie Halle after two games, a second company sports community reached the final; a reminder for the intensely funded sports clubs.

Course of the game
The 12th GDR Cup final had a clear favorite with BSG Motor Zwickau. The top division currently in 8th place in the table had an opponent in Chemie Zeitz who was bobbing around in the midfield in the second-rate first GDR league. In the early stages of the game, the Zeitzer were able to keep up to a certain extent, surprised with successful moves in midfield and came across the right a few times dangerously in front of the Zwickau goal. The Saxons, on the other hand, did not allow themselves to be disturbed, safely operating by midfield director Gruner. The weak point in the Zeitz ranks turned out to be Stopper Zeyer, whose uncertainty spread to his fellow men. Zwickau took the lead in the 19th minute, unsurprisingly: midfielder Dimanski matched left winger Speth, who let go of a violent shot at the Zeitzer goal from 20 meters through which the ball slipped over goalkeeper Ernst's fists. Then the Zeitz defense fell into complete confusion, so that the Zwickau attackers were able to appear dangerously in front of the opposing goal more and more often. That had consequences in the 37th minute: Zwickau's center forward Jura pushed into the Zeitzer penalty area from the left and passed across the goal. Ernst did not manage to intercept the ball and so the charging Witzger was able to hit the ball over the goal line. In the second half, the Zwickau superiority became even clearer; Thanks to good midfield work and dangerous storm peaks, they had the game firmly under control, the only thing missing was the exploitation of chances. Henschel in the 48th and Gruner in the 55th minute barely missed the 3-0. Zeitz had changed his tactics, Bauchspieß gave up his special guard against Zwickau's playmaker Jura and took over the task of the striker. However, he found little support from his own midfield, so that the Zwickau defense was not actually in danger. The final decision was made in the 80th minute: From the left, Jura hit a corner kick up in front of the goal, where Speth managed to head the ball over the entire Zwickau defense into the box with his back to the goal. DFV Vice President Günter Schneider then sums it up correctly: “The engine was the technically superior, more experienced team, although the team took a long time to come into play. In my opinion, the chemistry team was a victim of their own tactics, because in the first half, Bauchspieß repeatedly pursued Jura, but without being up to the task. ”(Deutsches Sportecho May 2, 1963)
