The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup is a racing series specially designed for racing drivers aged 13 to 17. All riders use a KTM RC 250 R as a motorcycle . This motorcycle is a sister model of the machine used by KTM in the Moto3 class. The races take place in the framework of the European motorcycle world championship races.

history

The partners Red Bull , Dorna Sports , KTM, Ipone and Alpinestars decided in 2007 to create a new racing series. The aim should be to promote young talents and prepare them for their way into the motorcycle world championship.

For the first six years, a KTM RC 125 was ridden. This machine was also used in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship. When the Moto3 class replaced the eight-liter class in the 2012 season , it was decided a year later to also use a Moto3 machine in the Rookies Cup.

In 2013 , the first event of the season did not take place in Europe for once. As part of the Grand Prix of Texas , which has been added to the racing calendar of the Motorcycle World Championship, the Rookies Cup season also began here.

So far, three former participants of the Rookies Cup have also been able to become world champions . The Frenchman Johann Zarco was Moto2 world champion in 2015 and 2016 . The Briton Danny Kent was in 2015 and the South African Brad Binder was 2016 Moto3 world champion.

participation

Both girls and boys aged between 13 and 17 years are eligible to participate. New applicants must first prove themselves in the so-called Road to Rookies Cup . At this special event, applicants are tested. A jury finally decides whether you are entitled to participate in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup . Participation in the Road to Rookies Cup is free.
