Libero Liberati (born September 20, 1926 in Terni ; † March 5, 1962 ) was an Italian motorcycle racer .

Career

Libero Liberati began his career in the Italian motorcycle championship. In the early 1950s he made several unsuccessful attempts to gain a foothold in the motorcycle world championship .

Later he made the breakthrough and was able to celebrate his first Grand Prix victory in the 1956 season at the Nations Grand Prix in Monza in the 350 cm³ class.

By far the most successful season of his career, incidentally also the only one in which he took part in all World Cup races, he had in 1957 on Gilera . This year, as was usual at the time, only five races took place, of which he was able to win four (including the Grand Prix at the Sachsenring and the Nürburgring ) and a second place. Liberati was superior to the 500cc world champion and was able to become vice world champion in the 350 cm³ class with one win, a second and three third places behind the Australian Keith Campbell . Nevertheless, he fell out with his team at the end of the season and did not take part in the 1958 World Cup.

In the 1959 season he competed in his last Grand Prix on Morini in the 250 cc class.

Libero Liberati was able to win a total of 39 races in addition to his successes in the motorcycle world championship, B. the Coppe d'Oro Shell in Imola in 1954 and 1960.

Liberati was killed in a traffic accident in Valnerina on March 5, 1962, at the age of only 35 . He was with his Gilera Saturno on the way from Terni to Modena , where the first run of the Italian championship was held. The stadium of the football club in his hometown, Ternana Calcio , was named Stadio Libero Liberati in his honor .
