Yiannakis Okkas ( Greek Γιαννάκης Οκκάς ; born February 11, 1977 in Larnaka ) is a former Cypriot soccer player who played in Cyprus for Omonia Nicosia and is the record national player for the Cyprus national team .

Career

In the club

At the age of 16, Okkas began his career with Nea Salamis Famagusta , for whom he scored 16 goals in 53 games, and moved to Anorthosis Famagusta four years later . Okkas won the championship four times with Anorthosis Famagusta, then he moved to PAOK Thessaloniki in 2000 . With seven goals in the first year, he helped his club to the Greek Cup and was voted Cypriot Footballer of the Year. Eventually Okkas moved to AEK Athens and in 2004 to Olympiacos Piraeus .

Okkas moved to Spain on a free transfer to the second division club Celta Vigo in August 2007 after his contract with Olympiacos Piraeus was not renewed. There he could not prevail, however, and scored only six goals in 24 games. As a result, he moved to his home country of Cyprus, initially joining Omonia Nicosia and, in the summer of 2009, Anorthosis Famagusta for the second time .

National team

Okkas was called up to the Cypriot national team at the age of 19 and has played regularly for his country ever since. In 2003 he played his 50th international match. In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , he scored three goals and also scored one goal in the qualifying game for the 2004 European Championship against France .

He has been the captain of the national team since qualifying for the 2006 World Cup . Since August 20, 2008 he has been the record player for Cyprus. With his 83rd international match, he beat Pambos Pittas's record . On February 8, 2011, he became the first Cypriot player to make his 100th international match in a 2-0 draw against Sweden .
