The Aprilia Pegaso 650 is a motorcycle model from the Italian manufacturer Aprilia . The Pegaso 650 has developed from a rather rough road enduro (until 1996) to a fun motorcycle suitable for traveling (1997–2003) to a supermoto (strada, factory) funduro (trail) (2004–2009).

Aprilia Italy presented the Pegaso 125 as early as 1989, followed by the Pegaso 600 in 1990, and then the first Pegaso 650 and a Pegaso 50 moped in 1992. A Pegaso 500 was offered in Austria and Switzerland . All models built up to 2004 (except the 50 cm³) have in common the single - cylinder four-stroke engine with up to 50 HP made by Rotax-Bombardier (now BRP-Powertrain ) , with the 650 models with liquid cooling , five valves and a balance shaft. Visually, the 600 series can be distinguished from the 650 models by the round double headlights. From 1993 to 2000 Aprilia also produced the BMW F 650 on the same production line, but the Rotax engine in the BMW only has four valves, a crankshaft with slide bearings and is tuned differently.

Model history

Pegaso 650, 1992–1996 (type GA / MX)

Offered with 48 PS (35 kW) at 6250 rpm (from year of construction 1996 due to EU homologation nominally only 39 PS). Although about 1500 DM cheaper than the BMW F 650, the Aprilia was not a great success in Germany.

Features: at that time a modern motor with high performance and reliability, electric starter, complex frame construction, upside-down suspension fork, consumption 6–7 l / 100 km, 14 l tank capacity, the suspension set-up is considered to be in need of improvement.

Model upgrade: from 1995 3 cm flatter bench, better chassis adjustment options

Variant: MX models were built in parallel, the MX already has the modified ML engine (modified side covers, clutch and starter idler wheels, as well as oil pressure controlled chain tensioner).

Features: small frame-fixed fairing, wide rectangular headlights, rather narrow bench, no main stand, only side stand

Pegaso 650, 1997-2000 (type ML) also called Cube (3)

Completely changed frame, lower seat height, larger tank (22 l, 5 l reserve), new chassis with 22 mm longer caster and shorter suspension travel make the new Pegaso a travel enduro. The weight is ready for use at 200 kg.

Special model Garda: standard with suitcases, top case (in vehicle color, silver), main stand and rebound stage adjustable by handwheel

Features: twin headlights, larger frame-mounted cockpit fairing, lower step bench

Pegaso 650 ie, 2001-2004 (type RW)

Injection system and an uncontrolled catalytic converter make the Pegaso more economical and the engine run more refined, conventional telescopic fork

Special model Garda: as standard with cases, top case (in vehicle color, green or anthracite), main stand and rebound stage that can be adjusted with a handwheel

Features: twin headlights, larger frame-mounted cockpit fairing, lower step bench

Pegaso 650 Strada, Trail, Factory, 2005–2009 (Type STRA, TRAI, FACT)

Completely redeveloped, engine with 660 cm³ displacement from Minarelli , as it is also used in the current Yamaha XT 660 .

Common to all three versions is an analog tachometer and a digital speedometer. An on-board computer that can be operated from the handlebars supplements the displays. A practical gag is the electrically openable flap on the tank, under which a small compartment for odds and ends and the theft-proof tank lid are hidden.

The bench is available in two different heights, with the higher bench being supplied as standard with the Factory. The bench is also suitable for longer distances and for two people. The frame consists of a bolted beam and a welded stern. Overall, it is stable and stiff and therefore also suitable for larger suitcases.

The Pegaso 650 Trail was only available in metallic gray and red. It differs from the Strada in terms of its greater spring travel, higher fenders, spoked wheels (19 inches at the front with slightly smaller disc brakes, 17 inches at the rear) and the standard fairing disc. Instead, the very imprecise fuel gauge (which is present in the Strada and Factory ) is missing; there is only one tank reserve light. The driving behavior of the trail is rather good-natured and not quite as curve-oriented as on the Strada .
