Map - Bordeaux wine region

The Graves de Vayres wine-growing region is located in the north of the large Entre-Deux-Mers appellation , part of the Bordeaux wine-growing region . Despite the analogy of the names, the area has nothing to do with the famous Graves area . Rather, the name Graves suggests a very gravelly soil. The name Graves de Vayres was used as early as the 19th century and since July 31, 1937 the area has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short). Vineyards are permitted within the municipalities of Arveyres and the eponymous Vayres .

The appellation covers 600 hectares of vineyards on the left bank of the Dordogne and is almost opposite the city of Libourne . Of the 600 hectares, only 110 hectares are white grape varieties. In 1982 the proportion of white grape varieties was higher than that of red varieties. Due to increasing difficulties in marketing the white wines of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, the red varieties were increasingly used.

Although white sweet wines were also made in the region , currently almost only dry white wines are made from the grape varieties Sémillon , Sauvignon Blanc , Muscadelle and a small proportion of Merlot Blanc . The must must have at least 178 g / l sugar (see must weight ) and after fermentation the minimum alcohol content must be 10.5 percent by volume. The harvest restriction for white varieties is 43 hectoliters / hectare.

For the dry red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc , Carmenere , Merlot , Malbec and Petit Verdot admitted. The must must have at least 178 g / l sugar and after fermentation the minimum alcohol content must be 10.5 percent by volume. The harvest restriction for red varieties is 40 hectoliters / hectare.
