Matthias Dolderer (born September 15, 1970 in Ochsenhausen , Germany ) is a German aerobatic pilot and the first German winner of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship 2016.

Career

MINI Challenge 2010

Beginnings

First, Matthias completed an apprenticeship as a banker . His flying career began much earlier on his parents' airfield in Tannheim in Upper Swabia . At the age of 14 he took his first solo flight here . In 1988 he was the youngest German to receive a microlight flight license. Only a few days later he reached third place at the German championships. Between 1988 and 1991 Dolderer took part in the squad of the German national microlight flight team in several European and world championships. With the title of German champion, he finally ended his career in this air sport . In the same year Dolderer became a flight instructor - also as the youngest German. Together with his sister Verena, he took over the family-run Tannheim airfield . In order to share their passion for aviation with others, the two founded Tannkosh , an international aviation meeting and Europe's largest fly-in with over 1300 participating aircraft .

In 2002 Dolderer became an official member of the Flying Bulls , for which he is still a pilot on several types of aircraft around the world. In total, he has spent more than 300 days of his life in the cockpit, piloting over 100 different types of aircraft and completing many airshows all over Europe.

Private life

Matthias Dolderer lives in Stuttgart and Kitzbühel and trains in Tannheim.

Motorsport

In 2010 and 2011 he took part as a guest starter in one race event each of the Mini Challenge Germany and in 2011 he finished 22nd overall with 12 points.

Competitive aerobatics

Dolderer intensified its aerobatic activities in the summer of 2006 with an Extra 300 ; a year later he took part in the aerobatic world championships in the Unlimited category . After switching to the Extra 330 SC aircraft , Dolderer celebrated winning the German championship and also achieved high placements in international competitions - always in the "Unlimited" category.

The race in Budapest, Hungary with a surprising fifth place brought Dolderer a decisive step closer to his goal of finishing the world championship in the top 10.

Dolderer surprised the entire field of experienced drivers when he made his World Cup debut in 2009 and came third at the season finale in Barcelona . Despite multiple time penalties in this last race of the season, he finally secured 9th place in the overall standings after threatening to miss his goal with 11th place.
