Steve Jones (born January 5, 1960 , in Hereford , England ) is a British pilot and aerobatic pilot who competed in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship between 2003 and 2008 and then became Race Director and Training Director of the racing series.

Career

Beginnings

Jones had his first flying lesson when he was only five years old, on the knees of a family friend in a Cessna in 1965. He earned both a commercial and an aerobatics - pilot license . Jones was initially a captain with British Airways and flew a Boeing 747 . His company restores wooden vintage aircraft, among other things. Privately, he works on vintage racing cars and takes part in car races with them. Born in Hereford, England, Jones is a former British master in aerobatics and, in addition to his many honors as an aerobatic pilot, has worked as an air taxi pilot, flight instructor and jet pilot.

Competitive aerobatics

Jones has been flying with Paul Bonhomme on the Red Bull Matadors team since 1994 . They have presented their show around the world from the United Arab Emirates to Japan. In 2015, Steve Jones and Paul Bonhomme fly together spectacularly in a unique performance through a barn, only meters apart.

Jones is currently exhibiting historic aircraft and is both director and test pilot for the " Electroflight P1e" project , which produces an aircraft with an electronic drive.

Steve Jones shaped the Red Bull Air Race as a dynamic competitor from 2003 to 2008, winning several podiums, including his two racing successes in 2006, 2007 and a third place in the overall ranking. In the 2007 Red Bull Air Race World Championship he won in Porto, defeating Mike Mangold , who in turn won the season at the end.

Jones retired at the end of the 2008 season as an active participant in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship. In the following two racing times in 2009 and 2010 he was a technical commentator for TV and Internet reporting. After the 3-year hiatus from the Red Bull Air Race World Championship between 2011 and 2013, Jones returned in 2014 in a changing role as race director and head of the jury for the competitions of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship and the Challenger Cup, as an important hub of the Sports back.
