Yoshihide "Yoshi" Muroya ( Japanese 室 屋 義 秀 , Muroya Yoshihide ; born January 27, 1973 in Fukushima , Japan ) is a Japanese aerobatic pilot and winner of the 2017 Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Career

Beginnings

Muroya started gliding training at a university sailing club in 1991 at the age of 18 as a cheap way to fly. Four years later he was already third in the Japanese gliding championships. He went to the US on his own to get his pilot's license at the age of 20. He started aerobatics in 1996 under the guidance of aerobatic instructor Randy Gagne. A year later he took part in the advanced world aerobatic championship. He flew for the first time at Japanese air shows in 1998 with an Extra 300L and a North American T5 Texan.

Competitive aerobatics

In 2002 Muroya started flying a Sukhoi Su-26 and a year later he took part in the unlimited world aerobatics championship. Since 2006 he has been flying air shows in more distant regions, for example in the United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Spain. The Japanese has already flown in more than 200 flight shows.

Yoshihide "Yoshi" Muroya, the first Asian pilot in the Red Bull Air Race, has done a large part in increasing the popularity of the Red Bull Air Race in East Asia - particularly in his native Japan, where he is the best aerobatic pilot in the country. His third place in the race in the Croatian town of Rovinj in the 2014 season caused great enthusiasm among his many fans.

Muroya secured his first title in the Red Bull Air Race in the 2017 season with victories in the last two races at the Lausitzring and in Indianapolis . Overall, the first four drivers (Martin Šonka, Yoshihide Muroya, Pete McLeod and Kirby Chambliss) separated the ranking list only 11 points before the last race in Indianapolis. There are 15 points for a win and 12 points for a 2nd place.
