Péter Besenyei (born June 8, 1956 in Körmend , Hungary ) is a Hungarian aerobatic pilot who participated in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship from 2003 to 2015 .

Career

Beginnings

Besenyei was born in 1956 in Körmend, Hungary. Although his parents were opposed to this plan, he learned to fly at the age of 15 . Just five years later, he contested his first competition in motorized aerobatics . He was a flight instructor in aerobatics and a test pilot for the aviation authority in Hungary. In 2017 Besenyei was awarded the Leon Biancotto Award by the FAI , the highest honor in aerobatics.

He later became known to the general public for his spectacular stunts, for example in 1999 he was the first man to fly through a naturally formed cave in China and in 2001 he was the first to pass the Budapest Chain Bridge below its roadway in an airplane. Both stunts he increased after passage in a normal attitude by a repeat in inverted flight .

Competitive aerobatics

With two world championship titles and a number of other international successes, he is considered one of the best stunt pilots in the world, as well as the inventor of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship , the concept of which he developed - at the suggestion of the main sponsor, the Red Bull company - and in which he also took part .

Besenyei has already flown all aircraft that were used in the Red Bull Air Race, including the Zivko Edge 540 , the Extra 300 and the MXS-R . He was also closely involved in the development of a new aircraft that made its debut in the middle of the 2010 season under the name Corvus Racer.
