Alejandro "Álex" Maclean (born August 6, 1969 in Madrid , † August 17, 2010 in Casarrubios del Monte , Toledo province ) was a Spanish aerobatic pilot and film producer . From 2003 he started in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship and was known as the "flying matador".

Life

Alejandro Maclean got his last name from a Scottish grandfather. As a child he built model airplanes and financed his first microlight aircraft while studying part-time . He then gradually expanded his pilot's license and was successful as a film and television producer before he dedicated himself entirely to aviation.

After winning Spanish aerobatic championship titles, he started in the newly created Red Bull Air Race for the first time in 2003 , and was subsequently instrumental in its further development. In eight seasons he took part in around 50 races and achieved the best result on April 21, 2007, a second place in Rio de Janeiro . In the final classification he finished sixth that year. In addition, he achieved five fourth places in the World Cup. From 2005 he was also the commander of the Spanish national aerobatic team.

On August 17, 2010, Maclean was training for a show at an airfield in the province of Toledo. During a low- level maneuver, his MXS-R went into a tailspin and hit the ground. Maclean was dead on the spot. According to local authorities, the accident occurred in an aerobatic area 500 meters from the airfield runway . After Eli Thompson and Ueli Gegenschatz, the 41-year-old was the third death from the Red Bull environment within a year. He leaves behind his wife Emma and two sons.

Prior to his death, Maclean had been awarded the prestigious Tissandier Diploma by the FAI .
