Juan Velarde (born September 19, 1974 in Madrid , Spain ) is a Spanish aerobatic pilot who is currently competing in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship .

Career

Beginnings

After graduating from high school, Velarde moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he completed a private pilot course. He then returned to Spain and began his flying career. He towed glider pilots and at the same time began his training as a commercial pilot in Madrid and Florida.

Juan Velarde is one of the best Spanish aerobatic pilots of his generation and has been an avid spectator of the world's fastest racing series since the beginning of the Red Bull Air Race. The Madrilene, who won the Spanish aerobatic championship in 2010, was introduced to flying at an early age by his father, a Boeing 747 pilot.

In 1999 he finally started aerobatics and shortly afterwards he joined the Spanish national aerobatic team, for which he competed in a Sukhoi 29 . Between 2004 and 2001 he took part in all aerobatic world and European championships.

In 2006 Velarde finally switched to the Sukhoi 26 , a single-seat aircraft, with which he won the silver medal in the team at the World Aerobatics Championships in 2007. Since 2008 he has flown both alone and in formations all over the world in the hope that one day he will get the chance to compete in the Red Bull Air Race. In 2014 he received this, started in the Challenger Cup and finished eighth. Just one year later, he was allowed to fly for championship points in the Master Class.

Although he managed to place François Le Vot in his first season in 2015 in front of his fellow rider in this class , he did not score a single World Championship point in the entire season.
