Mike Mangold (born October 10, 1955 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † December 6, 2015 in Apple Valley , California ) was an American (American Airlines) and aerobatic pilot .

Career

In 1984 he graduated from the Air Force Fighter Weapons School as the best pilot of his year with "excellent success". Until he switched to civil aviation , he was one of the figureheads of the US Air Force . Since 1990 he has dedicated himself to aerobatics. Statistically speaking, he spent around two years in the air. He died piloting an L-39 that crashed in the California desert while taking off from Apple Valley Airport in San Bernardino County .

successes

With his aircraft , a Zivko Edge 540 , he won both races of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2004 . Further successes in this series were:

  • 2005 overall winner with 36 points
  • 2006 third with 30 points
  • 2007 winner with 47 points
