Martin Šonka (born March 26, 1978 in Dvůr Králové nad Labem , Czechoslovakia ) is an active aerobatic pilot in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship .
Career
Beginnings
Šonka was active in the army for 14 years as a fighter pilot and member of the Czech Air Force show team, flying an L-159 Alca . He has also flown a Supersonic fighter jet, a JAS-39 , in Caslav Air Force Base's 211th Tactical Squadron.
Competitive aerobatics
Šonka, who was active as a gymnast for 12 years in his youth, has been a member of the Czech aerobatic team since 2005 and has been flying in the unlimited category since 2006. He holds four titles in the "Unlimited Championship" and became Vice World Champion in freestyle in 2011.
He began racing in the Red Bull Air Race at the age of 31, making him the second youngest pilot in the history of the sport after Pete McLeod of Canada. In 2018, Šonka won the championship for the first time with a total of four wins in Budapest, Kazan, Wiener Neustadt and Fort Worth.
