He received his first pilot license at the age of 18. Subsequently Bonhomme began aerobatics by asking for Richard Goode Aerobatics models Pitts Special , Yak 50, Extra 300 and Su-26 Sukhoi - the first Soviet civilian machine of Sukhoi - flew. A Zivko Edge 540 serves as an ultra-light, state-of-the-art aircraft . After his third world title, Bonhomme announced his retirement from the world championship in October 2015. On June 28, 2010 Bonhomme was awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy. This award has been given to outstanding Britons in automotive , shipping and aviation since 1930 . Previous winners included Malcolm Campbell , Jackie Stewart and Lewis Hamilton . Commenting on Bonhomme's election, Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Awards Committee, said: “We are delighted to present Paul Bonhomme with the Segrave Trophy for his accomplishments in the world of aviation. Air racing requires enormous skills and only the best pilots in the world are able to compete in these demanding events - it is truly Formula 1 in three dimensions. "
