Robert Kelleher

Robert J. Kelleher (born March 5, 1913 in New York City , New York , † June 20, 2012 in Los Angeles ) was an American tennis player , referee and functionary as well as lawyer .

Career

Robert Kelleher was from 1932 to 1937 assistant referee at the US National Tennis Championships in Forrest Hills. In 1962 and 1963 he was the captain of the US Davis Cup team that won the competition in 1963. Before the start of the Open Era , Kelleher was President of the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USTLA) in 1967 and 1968 . This managerial position was preceded by two years of vice presidency. He was a member of the Committee of the International Tennis Hall of Fame , into which he was inducted in 2000. He was also a member of the Great Britain International Club .

Kelleher began his legal career after completing his training at Williams College and Harvard Law School . Among other things, he worked for the Army Office from 1941 to 1942 and was Deputy Attorney General for the southern district of California from 1948 to 1951 . After running a private law firm in Beverly Hills from 1951 , he was appointed judge at the federal district court for the central district of California by US President Richard Nixon in 1970 . He continued his duties until March 5, 1983, when he moved to senior status.

Private

Robert J. Kelleher was married to the tennis player Gracyn Wheeler Kelleher since 1940 . They had two children, R. Jeffrey (* 1945) and Karen Kathleen, who also became lawyers.
