Ömer Kadir Özcan (born June 21, 1952 in Akçaabat , † October 22, 2013 in Trabzon ) was a Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor , he is strongly associated with this association. Both fans and clubs consider him to be one of the most important players in club history. He was an important member of the team that became the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship . Although his real name was Kadri Özcan or Ömer Kadri Özcan , he was better known under the name Kadir Özcan .
Player career
society
Özcan started playing football on the street and was then discovered for the youth team of his home club Sebat Gençlik SK . From 1969 he played here for the first men's team and took part with his team for the first time in Turkish professional football in the third division season 1970/71 . For this club he played until the summer of 1972 and during this time he noticed the talent hunters of several clubs in the upper leagues.
The newly formed club Trabzonspor , playing in the 2nd league , made him an offer. Since Özcan did not want to leave his homeland, he accepted Trabzonspor's offer. In his first season for Trabzonspor they finished second in the table behind Kayserispor and missed promotion to the 1st Lig with the same number of points because of the worse goal difference . In the following season you reached the championship of the 1st Lig and thus promotion to the 1st Lig .
The first season in the top Turkish league was successful for Özcan. On the one hand, he completed 22 league games and, on the other hand, he made the leap into the Turkish national team . His team occupies ninth place in the table and was not noticed as a team. In the second Süper Lig season, the 1975/76 season , the championship was completely surprisingly achieved. Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the Süper Lig among themselves. With Eskişehirspor , another Anatolian club narrowly missed the championship three times, but the ban remained. It was only solved with Trabzonspor's championship. In addition to the championship, they also reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup and just lost to Galatasaray Istanbul. After this championship, the league was dominated the next season and, in addition to the championship, collected all the other trophies in Turkish football by winning the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup . During this time, Özcan played almost all of his team's games and only dropped out due to injury or because he was suspended. One also attracted attention on the European football stage. In the second round of the 1976/77 European Cup, the reigning English champions and later Champions League winners Liverpool FC . Liverpool were considered one of the best teams in European football at the time and were the big favorites for these encounters. Trabzonspor surprisingly won their first game in Trabzon 1-0. The second leg, in which Özcan was not used, was lost 3-0. It was not until the 1977/78 season that the championship was awarded to Fenerbahçe with a point difference, but the two other trophies were won.
Trabzonspor got into big financial difficulties at this time and saw the solution in selling some stars. In addition, they wanted to create a revision in the team. Özcan was put on the sales list with other stars like Ali Kemal Denizci . While Denizci was sold to the then great rival Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Özcan went to local rival Zonguldakspor .
At his new club he did not make it into the starting line-up, although he completed half of the possible league games each season, but was otherwise on the bench. In his second season with this club, the 1979/80 season , the season ended in 3rd place in the table and thus achieved the best placement in the club's history. Despite this success, he left this club in the summer of 1980 and moved to Galatasaray Istanbul . For this club he played for a season, but was only used in a single league game. In the summer of 1981 he ended his active football career.
National team
Due to his convincing performance at Trabzonspor , Özcan was nominated for the Turkish U-21 national team in 1975 and played five games for these.
In the summer of the same year he was nominated by the then national coach Coşkun Özarı in the squad of the Turkish national team . In the EM1976 qualifier against the Irish national team, he made his international debut. For the next year and a half he was regularly nominated and played five international matches.
After almost two years without an international match nomination, he was nominated one last time for the national team in March 1978 by the new national team coach Metin Türel . In this encounter against the Romanian national team, he was on the bench.
Coaching career
Following his football career, Özcan switched to coaching and mostly coached clubs in the Turkish Black Sea region . In October 1997 he took over the post of assistant coach at his old club Trabzonspor and assisted Yılmaz Vural .
For the 2013/14 season he took over the second team Trabzonspors , the second division club 1461 Trabzon .
